Meet Austin Young | Structural Engineer, Longitude USA
1.What does your day-to-day look like at Longitude?
I support the Longitude US team with marine and offshore consultancy services, ranging from analysis and design of vessels, rigs and floating structures through to approval of marine operations. Specializing in structural mechanics, I also support clients and stakeholders to ensure accuracy in the delivery of complex design solutions are implemented through construction/build.
2. What inspired you to join your industry?
Since I was young, I always saw myself venturing towards the water. Growing up on the East Coast of Canada, I enjoyed sailing, boating and generally just being on the water in any way I could. Memorial University of Newfoundland offers one of North America’s only co-operative Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering programs, and I knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue a role in the marine engineering space.
3. Can you tell us something exciting you are working on right now?
Currently we are supporting a client with the sea fastening and grillage design for module transport via barge. The progression of seeing the design come to life from concept, through design and into build offers a sense of gratitude and satisfaction to your job knowing that successful transport has been effectively completed.
4. What does the future look like in energy and oceans in the USA?
I believe the future of energy and oceans in the USA and Americas is promising. The constant transition into renewables harbours new challenges, which facilitates exciting opportunities for innovative solutions to be made. I am just tremendously happy to be on that journey and to be a part of a group that can handle such a diversity of the worlds energy and oceans needs.
5. What do you enjoy most about working as part of the ABL Group team in the USA?
The thing that I enjoy most about my job is the network of people we have throughout the company and around the globe. The capacity of resources we have combined with the vast experience allows the team to tackle just about any problem that comes our way. It also allows to build meaningful relationships with people you have never possibly otherwise met, while solving some pretty neat science.
