The team at ABL Group shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ABL Group, but do you know our team?

Meet Ian Teo | Project Engineer, Longitude Malaysia

What does your day-to-day look like in Longitude?

My day-to-day constantly varies. As we only recently opened our operations in Malaysia, working alongside our sister company, the energy and marine consultants, ABL, who have long been established in the local market – I am often developing business development initiatives to win work and build relationships in Malaysia and the wider marine, oil & gas and renewable energy industries. I also support project engineering across our projects in Asia-Pacific working frequently with our teams in Singapore and Cebu, Philippines.

What inspired you to join your industry?

I have had a keen interest in science and engineering from a young age and I always thought ships and boats were very cool. It inspired me to study naval architecture at the University of Southampton. From that point on, I jumped on the opportunity to take up interesting roles in different locations around the world – vessel surveys with a leading classification society, LNG shipbuilding, maritime regulatory compliance and vessel design.

Now with Longitude, I get to build on my previous experience and contribute towards the many interesting and challenging projects.  The learning journey continues!

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

Most recently, I’ve been working on a yacht refit project, contributing towards the owner’s engineering and project management to support the safe and efficient refit of this historical privately-owned vessel. This project has been really exciting for me, as it has given me a technical insight into the world of yachts, where the challenges are very different to commercial shipping. It is a reflection of how no two days are ever the same at Longitude or as part of ABL Group, and I always getting the opportunity to develop into a new area.

What does the future in energy and oceans look like in Malaysia?

It is a very exciting time ahead as Malaysia’s energy transition journey gathers pace.  To meet its climate goals, Malaysia has ambitious plans to reduce its carbon emissions and emerge as a key exporter of clean energy in the region.  We see local and regional industry players taking up strategic positions to capitalise on the energy transition opportunities in Malaysia.  Longitude, along with the wider ABL Group is well positioned to build on our track-record and expertise to support the industry in delivering commercially viable clean energy projects – with a strong focus on floating solar PV and hydrogen.

A significant part of the green energy transition also involves helping the more traditional O&G and marine sectors reduce its carbon emissions.  With Longitude’s and ABL’s reputation and experience in the area, we understand the challenges and we are able help our clients embark on their energy transition journey through CCUS projects, use of alternative fuels and zero emissions vessel design.
