Meet Myo Minn Aung | Lead Structural Engineer, Longitude Australia

What does your day-to-day look like at Longitude?

My day-to-day at Longitude, based in the Perth office of our sister company the global energy and marine consultants, ABL, is dynamic and multifaceted. As a lead structural engineer with responsibilities in both structural and naval architectural engineering, as well as business development, my days are a blend of technical challenges and strategic initiatives. I spend a significant portion of my time overseeing sophisticated stability calculations for projects like FPSO Atlanta destined for deployment and operation in Brazil’s oil and gas sector.

This involves collaborating closely with my team to ensure accuracy and compliance with stringent industry standards. Additionally, I’m currently involved in the design of offshore sub-station foundations for renewable energy projects, leveraging my expertise to optimize structural integrity and performance. Alongside these technical endeavors, I dedicate time to business development activities, such as fostering client relationships, identifying new opportunities, and steering the strategic direction of our firm’s growth in the region.

What inspired you to join your industry?

My journey into the structural and naval architectural engineering field was fueled by a profound fascination with the intersection of engineering innovation and maritime technology. I was captivated by the sheer complexity and elegance of maritime structures, from towering offshore platforms to sleek vessels navigating the open seas. This passion for marine engineering, coupled with a desire to tackle real-world challenges, led me to pursue a career in this dynamic industry. The opportunity to contribute to transformative projects, such as FPSOs for oil and gas extraction and offshore sub-stations for renewable energy generation, inspired me to join this field and make a meaningful impact on the future of sustainable energy and maritime infrastructure.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

Currently, I’m deeply immersed in an exhilarating project focused on stability calculations for an FPSO destined for deployment in Brazil’s oil and gas sector. This project represents a pinnacle of engineering complexity, requiring meticulous analysis and innovative solutions to ensure the vessel’s stability and safety in challenging offshore environments. Simultaneously, I’m leading the design efforts for offshore sub-station foundations for a groundbreaking renewable energy project. This initiative underscores our commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and reducing our carbon footprint. It’s incredibly rewarding to be at the forefront of these transformative projects, where every calculation and design decision contributes to the success of ventures that are shaping the future of offshore engineering and energy production.

What does the future look like in energy and oceans in Australia?

The future of energy and oceans in Australia looks promising, with significant advancements in renewable energy projects, such as offshore wind farms. As a Lead Structural Engineer, I see increasing opportunities for sustainable development and innovative engineering solutions to harness these renewable resources.

What do you enjoy most about working as part of the ABL Group team in Australia?

What I enjoy most about working as part of the ABL Group team is the camaraderie and warmth from colleagues in both Perth and Singapore. With 12 years at this company, I’ve built lasting friendships and enjoy the supportive and familiar environment that makes every project feel like a collaborative adventure.
