Conversion of Heavy Lift Vessel (HLV)
Longitude supported this project with mobilisation engineering.
About the project
Longitude was contacted by Prysmian Powerlink Services to provide engineering support for the conversion of the heavy lift vessel, Marco Polo, into a cable lay vessel to be used for cable installation works worldwide.
She is a DP2 vessel capable of accommodating upwards of 1900 tonnes of cable with her two static tanks and features two offshore cranes.
Longitude was able to utilise its strong and unique track record of vessel mobilisations to support the design and sea fastening of bespoke cable lay equipment, specifically required for an injector vessel.

Challenges
As the offshore wind market continues to develop, more vessels
will be required that are able to perform key operations including
cable installations.
Prysmian Powerlink Services undertook this
conversion project, enabling great reactivity to the increased demand for such operations, as the industry continues to grow.
The engineering conducted by Longitude supported the
conversion of a now multi-purpose vessel which is able to operate
in both shallow and deep waters. This will mean that a single vessel
is able to support the installation of cables at multiple fields, making
it diverse.

Our scope of work
Longitude provided detailed design and fabrication
support for bespoke equipment modifications on the Marco Polo
vessel, addressing unique operational and structural challenges.
Our services included:
- Fabrication drawings for anchor cowcatchers, removable pilot
and boarding ladders, and vertical injector rack. - Design of removable ladders with sea fastening for stowage.
- Structural connections tailored to the ship-shaped hull.
- Engineering solutions for complex hull geometry challenges.
What the Client said
“On behalf of the Prysmian team, thank you and all
the Longitude team for the efforts put on this challenging yet
exciting MP1 project. Despite the pressure, it has always been an enjoyable and productive collaboration and that’s
what matters most in projects like this one”
