Case Study

Offshore supervision project at UMS Venus for SBM Offshore

Project title: Offshore supervision project at UMS Venus for SBM Offshore
Project location: Brazil
Client: SBM Offshore

About the project

Proper Marine – now Longitude Brazil – was contracted by SBM Offshore to oversee offshore activities and provide onshore support on the UMS Venus, supporting three units:

  1. FPSO Cidade de Paraty
  2. FPSO Cidade de Ilhabela
  3. FPSO Espírito Santo

The project commenced in May 2023 and concluded in January 2024.

The scope of activities included:

  • Daily monitoring of the Flotel gangway connection rate with the platform
  • Control of flights, aircraft, and companies contracted during the campaign
  • Daily POB (Persons on Board) control
  • Daily monitoring of UMS consumables
  • Management of the logistics for the disposal of Flotel waste equipment in conjunction with the contracted third-party company
  • Daily reports for SBM managers

What our team had to say

“The need for maintenance on SBM Offshore’s platforms led the company to contract a UMS, an essential vessel for providing logistical support during FPSO operations.”

“My role on board was to oversee all the facilities. I was also responsible for managing the personnel; we were the focal point of the Flotel.”
Lorena da Silva Carneiro Coelho, Offshore Project Engineer
“Coordinating a vessel with over four hundred people required adaptability, quick decision-making, and exceptional interpersonal skills.”
Frederico Cauper, Offshore Project Engineer
The challenges

The challenge consisted of managing operations on the UMS Venus, ensuring that activities were carried out in accordance with the requirements and expectations of SBM Offshore.

Proper Marine focused on establishing effective internal communication to maximize results in operations and team management, as well as overseeing operations performed on the platform and the flotel, which was connected to the platform by a bridge called a gangway.

The results
Proper Marine, through the expertise of its engineering team, conducted the campaign competently, resulting in the success of the operation. The satisfaction of SBM and the professionals involved was evident in moments of celebration upon completing yet another challenge.

The value we delivered

Comprehensive Operational Oversight

Proper Marine – now Longitude – managed daily gangway connection rates, monitored POB (People on Board), and controlled consumables and waste logistics for the flotel and platform. This ensured smooth operations and compliance with SBM Offshore’s standards.

Integrated Offshore and Onshore Coordination

The team acted as the focal point for SBM Offshore, supervising installations on the UMS and flotel while maintaining constant communication between offshore teams and SBM’s management. This dual presence streamlined decision-making and reduced downtime.

Enhanced Safety and Logistical Control

Proper Marine implemented strict flight and vessel scheduling, managed third-party contractors, and oversaw waste disposal logistics. These measures minimised operational risks and ensured adherence to environmental and safety protocols.

Expertise in People and Resource Management

With over 400 personnel onboard, Proper Marine provided leadership and adaptability, handling complex crew rotations and resource allocation. Their structured reporting system delivered daily updates to SBM, reinforcing transparency and accountability
