Meet the Team: Dmytro Chernyshev | Lead Marine Engineer, Longitude Dundee

The team at Longitude shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans – delivering design and engineering solutions to de-risk and drive sustainability in oil & gas, maritime and renewable energy.

Underpinned by our values of collaboration, safety, technical excellence, innovation and seeking the truth, Longitude works closely with ship owners, charterers and shipyards to develop practical, future‑ready ship designs to support both offshore operations and the wider marine sector.

You may know Longitude – but do you know the people behind the engineering?

  • Name: Dmytro Chernyshev
  • Title: Lead Marine Engineer
  • Location: Dundee, Scotland
  • Hobbies: Fishing
  • Favourite Music: Nightwish – Sacrament of Wilderness

Give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at Longitude. What keeps you on your toes?

I am part of Longitude’s ship design and marine engineering team, based in Dundee, and joined the company just over a year ago. In my role as Lead Marine Engineer, I work across a wide range of projects – from concept ship design and vessel feasibility studies through to system integration for alternative fuels and the integration of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology on board ships.

No two days are the same. My work can range from newbuild vessel design to retrofit and conversion projects, including modifications to DP2 vessels and the development of future‑focused, low‑carbon ship designs.

What connects every project is the same objective: applying engineering expertise to identify the most efficient, safe and sustainable fueling and power solutions for each vessel – whether that means upgrading an existing asset or designing a next‑generation vessel from the ground up.

What drew you to the industry and what keeps you passionate about it?

I enjoy seeing ideas materialise – when the invisible becomes visible.

I have worked in ship design and marine engineering for 16 years, leading the design, engineering and construction of more than 39 vessels across a range of vessel types. The maritime industry never stands still; it continues to evolve in response to market demand, regulation and decarbonisation goals.

Being part of that evolution – and helping to push ship design, marine systems integration and alternative fuel solutions forward – is what keeps me motivated.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

I am currently working on the system integration for shipboard Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology on a dredger.

Marine system integration is complex – especially when introducing new technologies into existing vessel layouts – but that complexity is also what makes the work exciting.

CCS has the potential to play a significant role in reducing vessel emissions, particularly for asset‑heavy fleets where full replacement is not always viable.

Looking at Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs) – we hear often about an aging and in-demand fleet – what should we be doing to overcome the challenges and what opportunities do you see ahead in the OSV market?

Flexibility is key. Offshore vessel designs must be capable of supporting both retrofits and newbuilds, while remaining adaptable to changing operational and regulatory requirements.

A vessel needs to work for its owner – delivering long‑term value and operational efficiency. That means building flexibility into the ship design from an early stage, allowing vessels to be adapted for different fuels, technologies and operational scenarios over their lifetime.

Future‑proofing is equally important. New regulations, alternative fuels and emissions‑reduction technologies are developing quickly. Ship designs must remain viable in an uncertain regulatory environment, with space, weight and power allowances for future upgrades.

Beyond the work, what makes you tick outside of the office?

I love being outdoors and spending time in nature – fishing in Scotland is hard to beat. And because it can be quite cold here, I’m also a big fan of the sauna.
