Meet the Team: Johan Samad | Regional Director for Facilities & Subsea, Asia Pacific

The team at Longitude shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans – delivering design and engineering solutions to de-risk and drive sustainability in oil & gas, maritime and renewable energy.

Our work is underpinned by our values of collaborationsafetytechnical excellenceinnovation, and seeking the truth in everything that we do. You know Longitude, but do you know our team?

  • Name: Johan Samad
  • Title: Director for Facilities & Subsea Engineering, Asia Pacific
  • Location: Kuala Lumpur
  • Hobbies: Reading, Movies/TV Series, Travel, Cooking
  • Favourite TV show: Landman – so apt that its related to the Oil & Gas industry

Give us a glimpse into your day-to-day at Longitude?

Every day is full-on, varied and a mixture of colleagues, clients and hands-on work, which I love.

As I am still fairly new to Longitude, I am actively engaged in exploring new opportunities, where our facilities and subsea engineering can support. Malaysia is a dynamic upstream, midstream and downstream market, as well with rapidly expanding goals in renewable energy generation. So there are a lot of areas where we can support in, to not only help keep the fast-paced development on track, but also to support in embedding process and engineering that will ensure long-term performance.

Beyond Malaysia, I am also working with Longitude colleagues to support clients across our wider Asia-Pacific footprint – China, Singapore, Philippines and Australia.

I work on our proposals, discussing with clients their challenges and the solutions that might support them. I am often meeting clients both old and new, every day, and of course, delivering as well on our work commitments.

What drew you to the industry and what keeps you passionate about it?

I was probably born into it, having grown up in an oil town in Seria, in Brunei. I grew up with onshore producing fields all around, as well as offshore along the coast.

The passion remains – it’s an exciting industry, which drives the economy, incubates technology, and uplifts livelihoods. I am proud and privileged to contribute to it.

Can you tell us what the Asia Pacific facilities and subsea team is focused on?

Right now we are exploring how we can support clients in CCS, MOPU and FPSO conversions, FSRU deployment and decommissioning.

With Asia Pacific often cited at the forefront of energy transition, how do you see sustainability shaping the future of facilities and subsea engineering across the region?

There is a lot of commitment from the major operators in the region to make this work.  There is increasing impetus on wind and solar powered wellhead platforms, CO2 capture, injection and storage, and Green H2 production.  This is increasingly shaping newer facilities with forward-planning and a next-gen look, and provided the momentum is sustained, I hope will lead to further evolvement.

Beyond the work, what makes you tick outside of the office?

Something different, waiting to be discovered.  It could be a new mall, different scenery, a cultural event previously not experienced. Bottom line, is I love an adventure, I love to explore new things, experiences and places – and taking it back into work – that is probably what sustains my passion in facilities and subsea. After all, we are an industry constantly on the move and with today’s rapid innovation – who knows what tomorrow will look like. That’s an exciting place to work!
